How to Disassemble a Toilet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Disassembling a toilet is necessary for tasks such as replacing it, making repairs, or cleaning thoroughly. Follow these steps to safely and effectively disassemble your toilet.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Gather Your Materials:

Collect the necessary tools and materials: adjustable wrench, screwdriver, bucket, sponge or towels, putty knife, and rubber gloves.

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply:

Locate the shut-off valve behind or near the base of the toilet and turn it clockwise to close it. This will stop the flow of water to the toilet.

  1. Drain the Toilet:

Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl. Hold down the flush lever to allow as much water as possible to drain. Use a sponge or towels to soak up any remaining water in the tank and bowl.

  1. Disconnect the Water Supply Line:

Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water supply line from the fill valve on the bottom of the toilet tank. Have a bucket ready to catch any water that may spill out.

  1. Remove the Tank:

Locate the bolts that secure the tank to the bowl. These are usually found under the tank, connecting through the back of the bowl. Use a wrench to unscrew the nuts from these bolts. Carefully lift the tank off the bowl and set it aside on a soft surface to prevent cracking.

  1. Remove the Toilet Bowl:

Locate the caps covering the bolts at the base of the toilet. Pry off these caps with a flathead screwdriver. Use a wrench to unscrew the nuts from the bolts securing the toilet to the floor flange. Rock the bowl gently to break the wax seal, then carefully lift the bowl off the flange and set it aside. If the bowl is heavy, consider getting assistance to avoid injury.

  1. Remove the Wax Ring:

Use a putty knife to scrape away the old wax ring from the flange on the floor. Be sure to remove all remnants of the wax to ensure a good seal when installing a new toilet. Dispose of the old wax ring properly.

  1. Inspect the Flange:

Inspect the toilet flange for any damage. Ensure it is in good condition and securely attached to the floor. If the flange is damaged, it will need to be repaired or replaced before installing a new toilet.

Disassembling a toilet involves turning off the water supply, draining the toilet, and carefully removing the tank and bowl. By following these steps and using the right tools, you can safely disassemble your toilet for replacement, repair, or thorough cleaning.
