Basin Mixers vs Standard Basin Taps - How to Choose the Correct Mixer?

Basin Mixers vs Standard Basin Taps - How to Choose the Correct Mixer?

Aline Melo |

Your bathroom renovation is going great, and it is time to choose the tapware. You have already purchased the vanity and basin/ stone top, but the basin mixers and standard basin taps look exactly the same? Here you will find out which mixer tap is ideal for your project.

How to Choose the Correct Bathroom Mixer Tap

The easiest way to find out which basin mixer tap is to identify which type of bathroom sinks you have: above-counter basin or undermount sink.

Undermount sink

It is relatively easier to choose a tap you have an undermount sink. In this case, the standard sized basin taps should fit your project.

The tip is to make sure there is enough space between the sink and the wall for the mixer tap.

Above counter basin

However, if you have an above counter sink, you need to consider the height of both sink and mixer.

Standard basin mixers are usually between 120mm and 150mm high, but some basins can be between 120mm  - 140mm high. In this case, a standard mixer may fit, but it could be uncomfortable or look unbalanced.

Tall basin mixers, on the other hand, typically range from 230mm to 350mm in height.

Our ZEVIO Tall Basin Mixer Brushed is 294 mm high, while the standard ZEVIO Basin Mixer Brushed is only 161mm.

It is always recommended to measure the above counter basin and the mixer before purchasing.

Basin Mixer tap or Mono Basin Mixer Taps

In some cases the basin mixer will be on the top of the basin and not in the stone or ceramic top and this is what we call mono basin mixer taps. For those types of basin, choose the standard-sized mixer tap, as it will be placed on the top of the basin, the high will not affect the usability.

The retailer or manufacturer  can provide you with the tap hole measurements and recommend the most suitable mixer tap.

Wall Mixers

When choosing a wall mixer for your bathroom, it's important to ensure that the spout extends far enough to reach the centre of the basin's waste hole.

This ensures that water flows directly into the drain while also maintaining a visually pleasing and balanced look.

Be sure to consult your plumber to ensure the mixer is compatible with your existing plumbing setup.

Are all bathroom mixer taps the same size?

No, bathroom mixer taps are not the same size and they will not fit the all sinks.

It’s important to measure your sink — and your previous mixer tap, if still available. Alternatively, measure the tap hole on your basin or stone top to check the diameter and determine which mixer will fit.

The standard size is 32mm, but it can vary depending on the supplier and mixer tap type.
