Ambulant Toilet - Australia Standards, Requirements, Dimensions, and Inspirations

Ambulant toilets are toilets designed for disability people that don't require wheelchair. An ambulant toilet must obey specific standards in order to be accessible for those with mobility impairments. If you want to have extra space for a wheelchair, you must follow the standards for Accessible Toilets instead. 

Ambulant Toilet  Australia Standards

In Australia, we have to obey to many legislations and premises standards when projecting or building a ambulant toilet.

Here as some requirements you must comply to:

Ambulant Toilet Dimensions and toilet size

•  900mm x 900 mm of clear circulation space on either side of the toilet entry door (airlock)
• Also a 900mm distance between the door swing and the toilet pan - if door is swinging inwards. Or 900mm distance between the door opening and the toilet pan - if the door is swinging outwards.
• 700 mm min opening in the cubicle doorway.
• Toilet pan projection of 610 - 660 mm from rear to the front of the toilet pan
• Toilet seat pan height range of 460 - 480 above the finished floor level - also required for accessible toilets.
• 900 - 902 mm width inside the cubicle.
• 45mm long privacy locking snib lock lever.
• The washing basing must be place outside the circulation spaces mentioned above. 

Ambulant Toilet Requirements

• Toilets suitable for a person with an ambulant disability - that complies with AS1428.1-2009 (Clause 16).
• Grab rails in each side of the cubicle - those ambulant grab rails must be able to withstand a forcer of 1100N applied at any position.
• Toilet roll holder in a accessible location.
• A coat hook inside the cubicle.

After having all the requirements in place, you must have a Full signage specifications in the AS1428.1.
