Today, we talk about a kind of light that is singular in design and brings a most unique theme to a room when placed just about anywhere. You have heard and read all about a plethora of kinds of lights, but spotlights are a thing of its own and need to be elaborated on separately. If you ever want to bring out boldness in a nook of your room, or want to bring attention to a certain wall or wall hanging in your inviting space, a spotlight is just the thing you're looking for. Hence, instead of looking for "spotlights near me" and going and hunting at a physical store, read our brief and handy guide to buying a spotlight online for your cosy little space today.

Considerations

The first thing you need to consider while buying a spotlight is the angle of the beam of the spotlight you will install. Even when you have chosen the size of your spotlights in accordance with the space you need it in, the direction of the lamp holder is what's most important. This beam angle depends on the purpose you're installing it for. Do you want a spotlight for lighting a larger space, or do you want it to focus on a particular part of a surface like a wall, a wall hanging, a cupboard, etc? For larger spaces, naturally choose wider beams that encompass a lot of area together for general lighting without distorting the scale of brightness from one corner to the next. However, for narrower purposes of focusing on a standout art piece and more, which is what spotlights are mostly used for, LED bulbs are used to power narrow beams which can be multi-directional while also coming with or without dimmers, dispersing a cone-shaped light distribution.

After this is considered, a related concern is the brightness of the bulb, measured in lumens and not wattage. As a rough guide, 300-400 lumens per square metre is recommended as a good ambient lighting level in a kitchen or hallway, rising to 700-800 per square metre if you have a worktop area that you want to be lit more brightly. Lastly, something that is equally important is the colour/temperature or CCT of this emitted brightness. This determines how "warm" or "cool" you want the brightness to be, ranging anywhere from 2700K to 5000K or warm white, cool white or daylight white. This is how you can tailor the lighted ambience of any and all spaces. Homes usually cut it off at around 4000K because above that temperature is usually not recommended in residential spaces. The brightest temperatures are usually used in bathrooms and kitchens for their peak functionality. The daylight white is the most naturalistic light and is used in spaces like drawing rooms, offices, or anywhere that could do with versatile lighting perfect for all occasions. Lastly, the warm white is best for spaces like bedrooms and leisure lounges as they emit a halogen-like brightness that is the most soothing to the eyes.

Types

Traditionally, there have been two types of bulbs that have been used to power spotlights Australia and everywhere else - halogen and LED bulbs. Even though halogen bulbs used to be considered relatively cheaper, more suitable and functional, they have slowly aged out. Instead, they were eventually seen to be giving out more emissions and had to be changed more frequently. Inspite of their old-world charm, colour and quality that many buyers look for, they could not hold up. Instead, a similar and more durable quality could be achieved by a modernized, cheaper and sleeker version of these bulbs - LED.

LED bulbs are a natural evolution from their halogen powered counterparts and are pretty much the only type now used in contemporary times. Firstly, they usually come in up to three different types – MR16 bulbs for dimmed or minute brightness applications, PAR20 for approximately mid-height ceilings, and PAR30 or PAR38 for large and bright applications, also accordingly to respective compatibility. Other than that, most of the other features that we have mentioned in the previous sections are catered to LED bulb spotlights. Last but not the least, they are incredibly energy-saving! When combined with dimmers, this conservation grows tenfold because dimmable LED lights adjust the intensity of the light emitted which automatically signifies saving of energy.

Ultimately, whether or not you install that shiny new spotlight that you spotted at the spotlight sale on our website depends entirely upon your aesthetic preferences for ambient lighting. However, if we could sway you even a little bit towards spotlights today to illuminate that spotlight wall art, our job has been successful.
