How to unpack a pallet?
If you had not yet started to unpack the shipment, the first step is to inspect the pallet. In case there is any apparent damages to it, take photos before taking it apart.
It is unlikely, as pallets are the best way to protect items during transit, but it can happen of your items are also damaged.
There are many different types of pallets: wooden pallets, hard plastic pallets, and glue sealer, so you may have to gather some tools, such as:
- Box cutter or safety knife
- Crowbar or Pry bar
- Safely glasses and gloves
- Place the pallet in a flat surface and tidy workspace where you can move around and take it apart safely.
- Cut the protective plastic/shrink wrap.
- Use the pry bar/ crowbar to remove the fasteners/ staples that holds the structure together.
- Check your items for any damages.
- Remove the items for the pallet base.
- Dispose the pallet (to follow).

To dispose the pallet, ensure to separate and remove the plastic wrap, wood, heavy duty plastic pallet. Small parts of the pallet can be disposed on the dump, recycling bins, however, if you have a large pallet, you may have to take it out to the dump/ recycling facility or hire a skip bin.
Sell or donate - some people opt to advertise the pallet online on platform such as Airtasker and Facebook marketplace, for sale or as a donation, as a way to get a free pallet disposal.
You would be impressed of how many people are after those type of packing material. Sometimes the pallet wood is of very good quality, and can be reutilised to create beautiful piece of furniture.

If you search for 'pallet disposal near me' you will find many recycling centers and skip bins companies advertising their services, but it is possible to find some services with free call out fee, and affordable services for around $70.
According to the City of Sydney, pallets are not part of the list of items with free pick-up for bulky items by the council. Please be aware that if the pallet is placed outside and not collected it may result in a fine.
