Cleaning up day, your bathroom will be soon shine and have a refreshing scent, but what about the shower head? Discover how to clean shower head and get rid of bacteria and water minerals deposited on the shower head.

Why do your need to clean shower head?

Most people don't realise that the shower head needs a clean up until the water pressure is reduced. Water pressure is often the to be the first sign of clogged nozzles caused by calcium deposits over time.

But this isn't the only reason why you should clean your shower head. By cleaning your shower head regularly, you reduce the risk harmful bacteria proliferation, including Legionella.

How often you need to clean a shower head?

You will find some blogs telling you to clean shower head every month, but if you start to clean and descale it properly, it is safe to do it every 3 months.

What do you need to clean your shower head - Products and materials

There are a few ways to clean your shower head, so please read this article until the end, before starting.

Using Vinegar to Clean the Shower Head:

  • Cleaning vinegar
  • Toothpick
  • Heavy-duty plastic bag or one of those freezer bags
  • Rubber band or tape
  • Clean cloth
  • Stool a step ladder

Step 1: Fill the heavy-duty plastic bag with the cleaning vinegar.

Step 2: Place the ladder/ stool under the shower so you can reach out to it.

Step 3: Place the bag with vinegar over the shower head and secure with the rubber band around it.

Step 4: Let is soak for several hours* (check the Don'ts below)

Step 5: Remove the bag, remove the stool/ step ladder and open the hot water, letting is run for about a minute

Step 6: Use the toothbrush and toothpick to clean an unclog the nozzles, and the cleaning cloth to finalise it.

Using Lemon to Clean the Shower Head:

If somehow you cannot or don't want to use vinegar to clean shower head, you can replace that by making a lemon juice paste.

To make the lemon juice cleaning paste you will need:

  • Bowl
  • Lemon juice
  • Baking soda or salt
  • Toothbrush

Add a tablespoon of baking soda and the lemon juice together and mix until it forms a paste. You can add more or less baking soda depending on how much you need to make.

After that, use the toothpaste to scrub and apply on the shower head.

Let is soak for a bit, and again rinse with hot water for about a minute.

If you noticed that the shower head can be removable and easily placed back, use wrench or a lockable pliers to remove the shower head and clean by using one of the above methods.

Once you are finished it recommendable to use plumbing tape around the shower arm to seal it before reattaching the shower head. It will avoid leaking.

What NOT to do when cleaning your shower head:

Brushed nickel shower head owners - DO NOT apply vinegar and don't let is soak!

Chrome shower head, brush/ brass gold shower head and any other special finishes - if your shower head have any of those colours, please DO NOT leave vinegar acting for more than 30 minutes.

Vinegar and lemon are acid and the prolonged contact can damage the metal finish.

How to clean brushed nickel shower head?

The solution provided previously can be too strong for brush nickel materials, so you must definitely cannot leave it soaking in vinegar, but you can use diluted white vinegar (1:1 ratio).

Use a spray bottle and fill it up with half white vinegar and half warm water. Spray the solution, leave it for 2 to 5 minutes and rise with running warm water for about a minute. Dry with a clean cloth to remove any vinegar residues.

You can still use the toothbrush and toothpick if you cannot remove the showerhead part.

We also recommend reading the manufacture's instructions and using only recommended cleaning products for this type of metal.
