Top Tips For Designing Your New Laundry

, by Zure Australia, 3 min reading time

It may not be the most fanciest room in your home, but the laundry room is still quite an important area as there is always some washing that needs to be done! While there's no rule saying you can't have a nice laundry room, it is crucial to keep its functionality the highest priority.

Location

When selecting an optimal location, keep in mind some of these factors. Washing machines and dryers will make a lot of noise, so make sure you keep these away from your main living areas! Nothings worse than hearing the rumbling of your washing machine in the middle of watching your favourite TV show.

Dryers will also cause a lot of condensation when in use so makes sure that the area is properly ventilated or located next to a door or window that can allow allow for all the excess heat and moisture to escape. Alternatively, install a ventilation system in the laundry room if you're unable to place your dryer near a door or window.

Lastly, reducing the distance from your washers to the drying lines. Unless you're hanging your clothes inside the laundry room, making sure that you don't have to walk all the way to the other side of your house just to hang those freshly washed clothes will save you a lot of time in the long run.

Appliances

Before you even start to design your laundry, decide exactly which appliances you will be using. Whether you use your existing appliances or use new ones, it is important to build around these as it will determine the depth and heights of the rest of your laundry cabinetry.

If you can, try to place your appliances on the same wall as your other plumbing such as laundry tubs and taps. Don't forget to include sufficient power points as well to power all your appliances!

There are 2 options when it comes to laundry appliances. Top loader or front loader. Both have their inherent pros and cons such as front loaders can be stacked to save space, whereas you can easily add more items to the wash with a top loader.

It might be also worthwhile to consider putting your appliances on a riser so you won't have to bend down as much when using a front loader. This also makes it easier to directly move your washing from the machine to the laundry basket.

Storage

Having ample storage in your laundry is a must, as all your cleaning products and tools will be stored here. Make sure that you include at least one tall cabinetry that can facilitate your taller items such as ironing boards, brooms, and mops. Alternatively, having a pull out ironing board instead of a freestanding may help to reduce used space.

Consider installing a rail in your laundry, as the inclusion of a rail allows you to hang your freshly ironed shirts and any delicate items.

If you live in a colder area, it might be worthwhile to consider installing a dry cupboard where you speed up drying times and keep them out of sight. Make sure to install proper ventilation to prevent any excess condensation and mould from forming.

For a more sleeker appearance, you can also hide your appliances in your cabinetry. This will also provide another layer to reduce the amount of noise that your appliances may produce.

Incorporating multiple built-in sliding laundry baskets to assist with sorting your washing before hand could also save a lot of time as well.
