Between your hectic schedule and that binge worthy show you just cannot stop watching, it’s easy to leave leftover food scraps in the drain or let dishes pile up. Of course you are not to be blamed. Your kitchen sink witnesses a lot of action over the week, be it a double or single kitchen sink- from grimy pots to leftover soil. And we know it doesn’t always smell like roses in your dish disposer. So how dirty is that kitchen sink? The average kitchen sink is brimming with grime, germs and more. Yuck! Before you run off to grab your bleach, hear us out. Learning how to properly clean a kitchen sink drain is critical for a happy kitchen where you can cook to your heart’s content.

How to unblock kitchen sink?

When it comes to unlocking a kitchen sink, don’t think chemical based drain cleaners are the go-to-fix always. Besides backsplash from stubborn blockages stand to harm your skin and eyes too. Avoid these mishaps in the kitchen with a few easy tricks.

It doesn’t matter what material your sink of made of, whether it’s a granite kitchen sink or a stainless steel kitchen sink. When debris get stuck in your drain something as simple as pouring boiling water can loosen the pipes. If your sink has a garbage disposal system attached, it could be the issue here. Turning on the disposal will break the blockage up if it’s the case. Incase it’s something else, you can bring out your plunger. All you have to do is fill the sink with hot water until it’s halfway full and create a seal around the drain. Next, position the plunger over the drain and pump up and down several times. Another natural alternative to using chemical drain cleaners is baking soda and vinegar. Remove standing water from the sink. Pour one cup of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar. Seal the opening and let the mixture sit for 15 minutes. Run hot tap water down the drain. If nothing works out, check out the elbow shaped pipe under the sink. Often food, grease and other debris may get stuck. In that case all you have to do is dissemble the pipe and clean out the gunk. 

 

How to clean overflow hole in kitchen sink?

It’s pretty important to keep the overflow hole in your sink from getting blocked as you can imagine. To clean your kitchen sink hole, stick a cleaning brush or pipe cleaner into the hole. Push it and out several times to remove as much buildup and gunk as possible. Pour boiling water through a funnel to flush any remaining buildup. Incase it stinks real bad, pour some baking soda down a funnel into the overflow hole. Next, pour some distilled white vinegar. It’s okay for it to fizz a little. Let it sit for sometime to let the mixture work its deodorising wonder. Flush the sink with boiling water and repeat as needed. You can also use a rubber hose by placing one end of it into the opening and blowing puffs of air into the opposite end. 

 

How To clean out kitchen sink pipes?

Cleaning kitchen sink pipes can be a little tricky because you cannot reach inside of the pipe to clean it manually. By following the right techniques you can however do the job just right. First remove the grease buildup by adding a mixture of hot water and dishwashing detergent down the drain. You can purchase a drain cleaner and pour it down the pipe by adhering to the instructions carefully. Next, use a plunger to remove food obstructions. Ensure you’ve unclogged hair with a snake. After you’re all done, don’t forget tp deodorise your drain with baking soda and vinegar. 

 

How to get rid of kitchen sink smell?

Nothing’s possibly worse than a stinky kitchen. There are however a few tricks to try if you have a garbage disposal. You can start by letting a sink full of hot, soapy water flush through. If you’re getting a super funky smell, you can combine ice cubes, coarse salt and lemon to get rid of the doors because it acts as a three punch cleaning wonder. If, after dealing with a terrible smell, all you want is something that smells kind of divine, there may just be a solution for that too. Dump in about half cup of baking soda, dribble in a few drops of essential oils, let it sit overnight or for a few hours at least and then rinse down with boiling water. If you want your drain to smell fresh always ensure to sprinkle down some baking soda periodically to absorb odours. 

 

Can you pour bleach down the kitchen sink?

Before we answer that question, you must know that bleach is not an ideal substitute for caustic or acidic chemicals to clear clogged drains, In fact it has very little value as a drain cleaner too. While occasional bleach treatment to sanitise your pipes and kill odour causing germs may be recommended, pouring it in large quantities down the drain can be dangerous. Also, beach is bad for your septic systems. Bleach is a toxic substance that should be used judiciously. It may react with other substances in your pipes potentially release other unnecessary and often poisonous elements- fumes and further plug up the system. 

 

It’s no fun task but cleaning your precious kitchen sink is an essential weekly chore. The best you can do is try and make it fun like grooving to some funky beats while cleaning it!
